Branches of linguistics
There are many areas of linguistics. The following are general theoretical fields of linguistics.

- Syntax - How words are arranged to create meaningful phrases (grammar)
- Morphology - Parts of words and how they go together
- Phonology - The sounds that make up language
- Historical linguistics - Study of language in the past and language change

Applied linguistics
Applied linguistics refers to the study of language with the goal of teaching, applying linguistic study to different fields such as foreign language teaching, ESL, translation, and speech therapy.
