The Real Academia Española or RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) is the official organization responsible for regulating and governing the Spanish language. It was founded in 1713, based on examples of Italian and French language academies.
The RAE is based in Madrid, Spain, and is affiliated with national language academies in twenty-one Spanish speaking countries, together forming the Association of Spanish Language Academies. The RAE's motto is Limpia, fija y da esplendor (Cleaning, making firm, and casting splendor).
