Tone (tono in Spanish) is the use of pitch in language to distinguish between words. Pitch is the frequency or wavelength of a soundwave that makes it sound "high" or "low". Neither English nor Spanish use pitch to distinguish between words, but some other languages, notable Chinese, do. Languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances of meaning, but not all languages use tone to distinguish lexical meaning or to distinguish between words. In languages where this occurs, tones are phonemes (discrete speech sounds), just like consonants and vowels are, and they are occasionally referred to as tonemes
